Introduction / History

The Selepet are an indigenous people living in Morobe Province on the Huon Peninsula of Papua New Guinea. Their homeland includes the valleys and mountain slopes around the Pumune River and the nearby coastal ranges. The Selepet language belongs to the Finisterre–Huon branch of the Trans–New Guinea language family and is closely related to the languages of neighboring peoples such as the Komba and Timbe.

Selepet communities have long been shaped by the rugged landscape of their region. Historically, families lived in scattered hamlets connected through clan relationships and trade routes with nearby mountain and coastal peoples. Their location between inland and coastal areas allowed them to participate in regional exchange networks, linking communities across the Huon Peninsula.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Selepet people live in rural villages surrounded by forested mountains and garden land. Daily life centers on small-scale farming, with families cultivating crops such as sweet potatoes, taro, yams, and other staple foods in hillside gardens. Pigs are traditionally raised and may be used in community exchanges or special gatherings. Hunting and gathering from nearby forests may also contribute to household food supplies.

Family and clan relationships play an important role in social organization. Communities have traditionally been structured around patrilineal clans, and cooperation among relatives is essential for farming, building homes, and caring for children and elders. In the past, men's houses served as important gathering places for instruction and community discussions. Over time, village life has increasingly centered around churches, schools, and shared community spaces.

Trade and travel have long connected Selepet villages with neighboring peoples. Historically they exchanged inland goods such as pigs and garden produce for coastal items like fish, shells, and coconuts. These relationships helped maintain ties between the highlands and coastal regions of the Huon Peninsula.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is widely recognized among the Selepet people, and churches are present in many communities. Christian teaching, worship gatherings, and fellowship often shape community life and family values. Many people identify with Christian churches and participate in regular worship and scripture-centered teaching.

In some settings, traditional ideas about spiritual forces or ancestral influence may still shape how certain events are interpreted. Within this context, continued biblical teaching and discipleship remain important so that believers grow in a clear understanding of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

Selepet believers benefit from continued discipleship that deepens their understanding of God's Word and strengthens their daily walk with Christ. Encouraging and equipping local pastors and church leaders is important so that congregations can grow in faithful biblical teaching and spiritual maturity.

Access to scripture and Christian teaching resources in the Selepet language can help families engage more deeply with the Bible. Opportunities for leadership development among younger believers can also strengthen the future of the church. Alongside spiritual growth, improvements in education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods can contribute to the overall well-being of Selepet families and communities.

Prayer Items

Pray that Selepet believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for the word of God.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom and faithfulness as they guide their congregations.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
Pray that the churches among the Selepet will remain united and active in sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples.
